You know how some people just get it? That’s Tyler Trompetter. He’s not flashy. He’s not trying to be Insta-famous. He’s just out here doing great work, solving tough mortgage problems, and making you feel like you're the only client he’s got on his plate.
Tyler was actually my very first guest on The Best of White Rock, and it couldn’t have been a better kickoff. The guy is local through and through—raised in Ocean Park, raising his own family here now—and he’s built a reputation not just for getting deals done, but for doing it in a way that feels refreshingly human.
15 Years of Knowing Where the Banks Say No
Tyler’s got over 15 years in the mortgage business, and while he started in the big banks, he found his stride helping the not-so-straightforward clients. You know, the ones the banks turn away because they’re self-employed, have tricky credit histories, or just don’t fit into a neat little box.
“I cut my teeth doing tough files—where the banks say no. I’ve worked with everyone from first-time buyers to folks with no credit or new to the country. And I love it.”
He spent years with HomeTrust, one of the biggest names in alternative lending, and during that time he wasn’t just writing deals—he was out there teaching other brokers how to handle the hard stuff. That’s the kind of depth most brokers just don’t have.
The Blackberry Chairlift Moment That Changed Everything
One of the best moments in our chat? Tyler shared the exact second he decided to become a mortgage broker. He was on a family ski trip as a teen, riding a chairlift, when his dad (also a broker) kept checking his Blackberry and casually said, “Just funded a deal—paid for this whole trip.”
“That was it. I thought, wait... what do you actually do? And how do I do it too?”
At that moment, the seed was planted. And even though Tyler jokes he practically lives at his office now, he’s still chasing the freedom and flexibility that inspired him back then—helping clients from anywhere, often without them needing to leave their couch.
When Everything's on the Line, He Shows Up Big
There’s a story Tyler told that stopped me in my tracks. A family was days away—five days—from completing on a pre-sale townhouse. They were short on financing. Their bank dropped the ball. It looked like they might lose their home and their $90,000 deposit.
“They called me. Within 20 minutes, I knew where to take the file. Within 24 hours we had approval. Within 48 hours it was at the lawyers, and they closed on time.”
That’s not just experience. That’s someone who’s calm under pressure, knows the landscape cold, and knows how to move fast when it matters.
The Broker With a Brain—and a Heart
Tyler is the first to admit his website is basic and his social media game isn’t winning any awards. But his Google reviews? Solid gold. Why? Because when people work with him, they remember how easy he made the process. How he explained things clearly. How he answered questions the bank couldn’t. How he was there.
“I’ve built this business almost entirely on referrals and repeat clients. That’s the biggest compliment anyone could give me.”
And then, just when I thought we’d wrapped, Tyler shared something that hit me right in the feels…
The Legacy That Lives On in Northern Thailand
Years ago, Tyler lost his brother Ben—someone I knew personally. Out of that tragedy, his family created the Live Like Ben Foundation, a grassroots effort that led to building an entire school for kids in a remote mountain village in Thailand.
“It started with concerts and community donations, and ended with a rebuilt school for a village my brother loved. It’s a little piece of White Rock on the other side of the world.”
