stephanie wright - From Haircuts to Heartfelt Connections: Inside Mystique Hair Design

Stephanie Wright didn’t set out to run a salon that feels more like a second home—but that’s exactly what she’s created at Mystique Hair Design. From the outside, it’s a cozy spot on Marine Drive in White Rock. But inside, it’s a haven where clients are treated like family, and staff stick around for years.

Yeah, it’s not your typical ‘hair salon’ story.

I sat down with Stephanie to hear how she built a business that’s about way more than just great hair. It’s about connection, community, and making every person who walks in feel like gold.

From 2005 to Today – The Birth of Mystique Hair Design

Back in 2005, Stephanie opened Mystique Hair Design at just 27 years old. Before that, she’d worked in three different salons, and each experience taught her what she didn’t want her business to be. "I didn’t want to run a place where people felt like workhorses," she said. "I wanted them to feel heard and valued."

That’s exactly what she’s created. Some of her staff have been with her since 2009—a rare thing in an industry known for high turnover. "I lead with empathy and love first," Stephanie said. And it shows. When someone needs time off for a big life event, she makes it work. When they have a tough day, she’s the first to listen.

Creating the Guest Experience – It’s All About the Details

For Stephanie, the client experience at Mystique is just as important as the cut or color. Every guest receives what she calls a ‘beauty ritual’ – a hand scrub, steam towel infused with eucalyptus, hand cream, lemon tea, and a piece of chocolate. "We want everyone to walk out feeling like a million bucks," she said. And judging by her Google reviews, that’s exactly what happens.

But it’s not just the pampering that keeps people coming back. It’s the feeling of being seen, heard, and treated like family.

Giving Back – Local and Global Impact

Mystique isn’t just about hair. Stephanie and her team have partnered with Ally Global to teach hairdressing skills to women rescued from human trafficking. They’ve also supported local charities like City Dream Center and Wagner Hills, always finding ways to give back without shouting about it on social media.

"We don’t do it for the spotlight. We do it because it’s the right thing to do," Stephanie said. "And that makes all the difference."

Looking Out for the White Rock Community

Stephanie’s connection to White Rock runs deep. Whether it’s checking in on the kiteboarder who broke his leg or sweeping up after a New Year’s break-in, she’s there for her neighbors. "I feel like part of the community here," she said. "People walk by, wave, and check in. It’s more than a business—it’s a family."
