We All Want to Be Heard. Melanie Huck Is Helping People Do Exactly That.

When I sat down with Melanie Huck, owner of Rosemary Heights Counselling, I expected we'd spend most of our time talking about mental health, relationships, and counselling.

We certainly did.

But what surprised me most was how quickly the conversation became less about therapy and more about being human.

At one point, Melanie said something that I think every one of us can relate to.

"We all want to be heard."

It's such a simple statement, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized just how true it is.

Whether we're talking about a teenager who feels misunderstood, a couple struggling to communicate, or someone carrying around years of anxiety or grief, most people aren't looking to be "fixed."

They just want someone to genuinely understand them.

That simple idea seems to be at the heart of everything Melanie and her team do.

Counselling Is About More Than Listening

One of the biggest misconceptions people have about counselling, according to Melanie, is that counsellors simply sit in a chair and listen.

Listening is certainly part of it.

But it's only one piece.

As she explained, she's constantly paying attention to body language, patterns, emotional responses, family history, and even the things people aren't saying.

She put it this way.

"I don't just listen to people."

Instead, she's helping people understand themselves in ways they may never have considered before.

That really changed the way I think about counselling.

Building Safety Before Solutions

One thing I admired throughout our conversation was how much emphasis Melanie places on creating a safe environment.

Think about it.

Walking into a counsellor's office for the very first time probably feels intimidating for a lot of people.

Many arrive carrying years of experiences that have taught them to protect themselves.

Some wear emotional armour.

Others avoid difficult conversations altogether.

Rather than trying to force people to open up, Melanie simply meets them where they are.

Her goal isn't to rush anyone.

It's to help them leave feeling just a little better than when they walked in.

I really appreciated that philosophy.

Couples Therapy Isn't What Most People Think

One of my favourite parts of the interview was talking about relationships.

Like many people, I've heard the assumption that couples counselling is something you do when everything has already fallen apart.

Melanie sees it very differently.

She described herself as something of a relationship translator.

That made me smile.

Two people can deeply love each other while still completely misunderstanding what the other person is trying to say.

Her job is often helping each person hear what the other has been trying to communicate all along.

She also shared something I'd never really thought about before.

Relationships naturally move in and out of connection.

Small moments of disconnection happen all the time.

The goal isn't avoiding them altogether.

It's learning how to find your way back to each other.

Honestly, I think that's advice that extends well beyond marriage.

A Conversation About Trauma That Changed My Perspective

Another fascinating part of our discussion was learning about EMDR therapy.

I'll admit, before this interview, I had heard the term but couldn't have explained what it actually meant.

Melanie described it as a science backed trauma treatment that helps people process painful experiences so they no longer carry the same emotional weight.

The memories don't disappear.

But the emotional intensity attached to them often does.

Hearing how the process works and how many people have benefited from it gave me a much greater appreciation for how much counselling has evolved over the years.

Sometimes the Greatest Success Story Comes Years Later

I asked Melanie if there were any success stories that stood out during her career.

Her answer wasn't about one dramatic breakthrough.

Instead, she shared something much more meaningful.

Sometimes, years after working with someone, she'll hear through another client that they're doing well.

Maybe they've built a great life.

Maybe they're getting married.

Maybe they simply wanted her to know they never forgot the support they received.

She smiled as she talked about those moments.

You could tell they mattered.

It reminded me a lot of real estate.

Sometimes years go by before a past client reaches out to share a life update.

Those moments remind you that what you do really does make a difference.

More Than a Business

Melanie has been a Registered Clinical Counsellor since 2002.

After years working with Sources and later an established counselling practice, she took over the practice that would eventually become Rosemary Heights Counselling.

Like many entrepreneurs I've interviewed, she admitted that learning how to run a business was a completely different challenge from doing the work she loved.

That honesty made her story even more relatable.

Today, Rosemary Heights Counselling has built a team of experienced Registered Clinical Counsellors, each with their own areas of expertise, from youth counselling and trauma therapy to grief, anxiety, depression, and couples counselling. Their goal is simple, to provide compassionate, evidence based care while helping people better understand themselves and the people they love.

If You've Been Thinking About Talking to Someone...

One thing I took away from this conversation is that you don't have to wait until life completely falls apart before asking for help.

Sometimes it's about improving a relationship.

Sometimes it's about understanding yourself.

Sometimes it's simply having someone help you make sense of what's already there.
