Julia Chien Is Helping People Feel Better From the Inside Out

Every once in a while, you sit down with someone and realize pretty quickly that what they do isn’t just a job, it’s personal.

That was my experience sitting down with Julia Chien.

Julia is a registered dietitian based right here in White Rock, and while you might think that means meal plans and telling people to eat more vegetables, that’s not really what she does. Or at least, that’s not the most important part.

What she really does is help people understand what’s going on in their bodies and why.

And that all started with her own story.

Julia shared with me that she was actually born with severe eczema. Not the kind that comes and goes once in a while, the kind that shapes your day-to-day life. Doctors prescribed topical steroids, which helped at first, but over time, they stopped working.

And when they stopped working, things got worse.

So she made a decision that most people don’t make.

She decided to stop relying on the quick fix and figure out what was actually causing the problem.

That decision led her down a long road. One that involved what’s called topical steroid withdrawal, which she described as a very difficult process. But it also led her to something that would eventually shape her entire career.

She started to realize there might be a connection between what she was putting into her body and what was showing up on her skin.

At the same time, she was studying to become a dietitian.

Which is one of those moments where life kind of lines things up for you.

As she put it, things just started to click.

And from there, everything changed.

What I found really interesting about our conversation is how she explained why most people don’t take that route right away. Because if you’re dealing with something uncomfortable, painful, or frustrating, you want it gone fast.

And that’s where most of us go.

We want the quick solution.

“People want instant gratification,” she told me. “They want their symptoms to go away right away.”

And that’s exactly what things like medications or topical treatments are designed to do. They work quickly. But they don’t always solve the underlying issue.

The approach Julia takes is different.

It’s slower. It’s more intentional. And it’s focused on getting to the root cause.

Which, if you think about it, makes a lot more sense, but it’s also a lot harder.

One of the biggest ideas she talked about was something you’ve probably heard before, but maybe never fully thought about.

Food is medicine.

Now that sounds simple. Almost too simple.

But when she explained it, it landed differently.

“Food is medicine is basically fueling your body and optimizing your nutritional status from food to help you feel better.”

And “feel better” can mean a lot of things.

For some people, it’s clearer skin. For others, it’s better energy, less bloating, or just feeling like themselves again.

What stood out to me is how often people skip over that foundation.

They jump straight to supplements, quick fixes, or whatever trend is currently all over social media.

And there are a lot of trends.

Keto. Fasting. Juice cleanses. Cutting calories to extreme levels.

Julia sees it all.

And her take on it was refreshingly honest.

There’s just a lot of noise.

The real issue isn’t that these things exist. It’s that people assume there’s one solution that works for everyone.

There isn’t.

“Everyone is different,” she said. “Genetics, lifestyle, stress, your medical history… all of that plays a role.”

Which is why her approach is built around personalization.

When someone comes to her, it’s not about handing them a generic plan and sending them on their way. It starts with understanding where they’re at, what they’re dealing with, and what’s actually realistic for them.

Because that’s another thing most people get wrong.

They try to overhaul everything all at once.

Eat perfectly. Cook every meal. Follow a strict plan.

And then life happens.

They get busy. They get overwhelmed. And it all falls apart.

Julia spends a lot of time helping people build something that actually fits into their real life.

Not some ideal version of it.

And that’s where the real change happens.

One of the things I appreciated most about our conversation is how she reframed what a dietitian actually does.

It’s not about being the “food police.”

In fact, she laughed about that.

People assume she eats perfectly all the time. She doesn’t.

She enjoys pizza like everyone else.

What she focuses on is helping people create structure, reduce overwhelm, and make better decisions consistently over time.

And sometimes that has less to do with food, and more to do with everything else going on in their life.

Stress. Time. Habits. Environment.

All of it matters.

And when it starts to come together, the results can be pretty incredible.

She shared stories of clients who went from barely being able to get out of bed because of their skin or health issues, to feeling like themselves again, even getting married and living fully again.

That’s the kind of transformation she gets to be part of.

And you can tell that’s what drives her.

When I asked her what the most rewarding part of her work is, her answer was simple.

“All of it.”

If you’re someone who’s been dealing with ongoing health issues, whether it’s gut health, skin concerns like eczema, or just feeling off and not really knowing why, it might be worth having a conversation with Julia.
